Max Allen, editor of the book Ideas that Matter – The Worlds of Jane Jacobs
Max Allen will lead a walk through his neighbourhood, beginning at 8 pm at the front doors of the Ontario College of Art and Design, 100 McCaul Street, between Dundas and Queen. The walk will include Grange Park with its views of OCAD (the building on stilts) and the Art Gallery of Ontario (under construction), the historic houses of Beverley Street and the buildings along Phoebe and Soho, south through the seldom-visited alleyways to John and Queen Streets and the chaos of the nite club district. The four blocks of Queen Street we’ll see – proposed (and opposed) for designation as Toronto’s first commercial historical district – are a classic Jane-Jacobs-concatenation of mixed urban uses, minus any sense of community.
